When I was 7 years old, my mother was expecting my younger brother, Andy. One day she and I watched a PBS production about midwives and natural childbirth, at the end of which my mother exclaimed “now that's the way it should be done!” From that moment I knew I would be a midwife.
I graduated nursing school the first time in 1984 with an ADN from Eastern Kentucky University. My first job out of school was in the NICU at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Over the next few years I transitioned to newborn nursery, postpartum & gyn, and labor & delivery at hospitals in Somerset, Monticello, & Richmond. Taking a class or two each semester, I earned my BSN in 1992. In 1997, I graduated from what is now known as Frontier Nursing University, which is the latest incarnation of Mary Breckinridge’s Frontier Nursing Service in Hyden, Ky. My MSN was earned from Case Western Reserve University in 2001.
For several years I practiced full scope midwifery at Kentucky Women’s Center, a private OB/GYN practice in Campbellsville, KY, and for Frontier when they were based in Manchester. From 2003 to 2011 I was an APRN for the family planning and women’s care programs at various county health departments across the state.
Upon returning to midwifery & prenatal care in 2011, I found numerous women taking at least one, sometimes as many as 3, antidepressive agents throughout their pregnancies. Although most conventional research suggests that adverse fetal effects of these agents are rare, I felt great concern. I began searching for another way to help women cope with stress. What I found was therapeutic massage.
Like most people, I knew that massage relieves stress through muscular relaxation, and I had read research on the benefits of massage on depression. I had always been interested in massage so in 2012 I enrolled at Lexington Healing Arts Academy. There I learned that massage therapy affects each organ system in the body. The nervous system becomes balanced. The endocrine system becomes regulated. The immune system becomes more efficient. Therapeutic massage facilitates homeostasis at the cellular level.
With this knowledge and training, I can continue my lifelong commitment to women in a new way. Massage therapy can help relieve the discomforts of pregnancy and labor, can facilitate menstruation and fertility, can ease the transitions of midlife, and can help to balance mood during every phase of life. I feel that by supporting women in this manner, I contribute to the well being of her entire family.
